Got Perimenopause? I Got Tips!

Ahh, perimenopause.

I bet a whole bunch of thoughts pop into your head when you hear this word.

One may be a big 'ol UGH!

Well, generally, most of us women don't have control over when this time will be sprung upon us. For some it's a lot earlier and for some it's a lot later and then there's a whole bunch of us in between.

And everyone's situation is unique and different so you need to do what's right for you in terms of helping any kind of issues you may be experiencing.

An Ayurvedic View

Generally, when we enter perimenopause, on our way to menopause, the Vata time of life is coming upon us soon or we are already in it. Vata time of life is 50 and over.

Vata is governed by the elements of air and ether.

These elements are more subtle and light and mobile as compared to say the earth element which is more solid, heavy and dense.

When we are born, this earth element is more prevalent. Think chunky, pudgy babies with their soft baby skin.

Air and ether are at the other ends of...

What I Thought I'd Never Do Again

That pic above is me hanging out, (literally, lol) with my 3 siblings in Florida this past November. My mom, my two sisters and I went down to visit my brother for a weekend. My one sister had the great idea of climbing the tree for a pic. The 3 of them took their spots while I ran in the house for something...probably to go to the bathroom, lol and when I came back I decided to just jump up on that limb and take a different perspective.....if you know me at all you know I love to shift perspectives!

Getting back to the title of this post, the thing that I thought I'd never do again is FLY! On a PLANE!

Here's why I thought I never would and why I did it:

I was REALLY AFRAID TO STEP ON A PLANE AGAIN. I never had a bad experience. It was my fear that 'something may happen' and all the stories I made up in my head.

I remember the last time I was on a plane.....it was about 12-13 years ago. As soon as I got on the plane I had a panic attack. My heart...

Keep Your Cool This Summer with Ayurveda

It's finally summer here in the Northern Hemisphere.

And it's been quite hot and humid where I live - oh yes, welcome summer time!

This time of year can be a lot of fun with more outdoor activities, picnics, walks in nature and beach time!

It can also be a time of year where if we overdo things, we can get burnt out.

Summer time is Pitta dosha season so that means there's a lot of fire element present.

It's the hottest time of the year where the sun is at its purest radiant self, and if we forget to take care of ourselves, that radiance within us can turn into over-stimulation, over-heating and/or exhaustion.

In the physical body this can look like:
  • skin rashes
  • acid reflux
  • burning or itching eyes
  • inflammation
  • excessive sweating
  • loose stools
  • headaches or migraines & more
In the mental/emotional body it can manifest as:
  • being overly judgmental of yourself and others
  • irritability
  • anger & more

Here are some quick and simple tips to keep...

New Year's Message

Happy 2019 To You!

I wanted to share a message with you for this next year.

It started with what I've been reflecting on bringing into this new year in terms of my own continually evolving inner work and my work with helping other folks who are ready, to dive deeper into their own healing journey.

And this morning when I got up and after I walked my pup, I wanted to pick a card. The Ganesha deck called out to me and so that's the one I went with.

I asked 'What is a key message for this new year?'

And it is 'healing' as you can see in the card above.

It's amazing how many times the message is so spot on!

So with that, here's my message and new year's wish for you:

I wish you many pauses........

moments of seeing the beauty right in front of you

pauses of quiet and solitude

moments of full awareness when listening to those you love

pauses of deep gratitude

moments of peace and joy

pauses for nice deep breaths

moments of truth

pauses for reflection

moments of deep clarity

pauses where...

The 5 Elements and a Yoga Practice to Experience Them

This summer I did a whole series on the chakras in my yoga classes and just finished up another series around the 5 Elements.

In the Yoga & Ayurveda Teacher Training I'm taking, we learned about the 5 elements, and what I learned blew my mind and that's why I created sequences around them for my yoga classes.

Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India, says that all of creation is formed from the 5 elements coming together.

The 5 elements are Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether.

Each element has certain qualities, and they also all have a relationship to each other.

Once you understand this, you can use the 5 elements to help balance your body and mind.

Let's start with Earth.

When you think of Earth, what do you think of?

The qualities of earth are solid, heavy, dense, immobile, hard, cool, grounded, stable. In the body think in terms of the dense components such as bones, muscle & fat tissue, joints, ligaments and tendons.

You can connect to the earth element any time you...
