Balancing the Sacral Chakra with Yoga and More

 The Sacral Chakra

Today we'll discuss the Sacral Chakra or the Sanskrit term, Svadhisthana, which means 'inner dwelling place'.

If you missed the first post on the Root Chakra in this series where I also explain a little bit about the chakras, you can read that post here.

The Sacral Chakra is located at the center of the pelvis, between the Root Chakra and the navel.

The color associated with this chakra is orange and is symbolized by a lotus flower with 6 petals. The petals are arranged around a circle. The circle represents wholeness and the crescent moon at the bottom of the circle represents the element associated with the Sacral Chakra which is water.

The Sacral Chakra is the second closest main chakra to the earth. It correlates with our emotional balance, sensuality and what I like to call our energetic sparkle.

When unbalanced you may feel isolated, emotionally unstable and creatively blocked. You can feel bored, lacking desire and passion and also become rigid in body and behavior.

When you begin to become more aware of the second chakra and begin to balance the energy here, you will feel more fluidity in relation to your own sensuality and creativity, enhance your ability to embrace change and know that you are deserving of all life's pleasure. You also are able to nurture yourself, and hence, can also help nurture others.

Life becomes more enjoyable when you can open up to the pleasures of life.

Think of gazing at a beautiful sunset, enjoying a delicious meal, listening to your favorite music (maybe even busting a move!). Pleasure can become a healing force whereas denying yourself simple pleasures can lead to addiction and overindulgence.

Healthy pleasure can lead to deep contentment.

Where the element of earth at the Root Chakra is more grounding and stable, the water element is fluid and formless. Water takes the path of least resistance. But we need the stable foundation of the earth, or Root Chakra, in order to move with fluidity and ease and flow.

The associated sense is the sense of taste. The body areas associated with this chakra are the hips, low back and lower abdomen.

The main purpose of this chakra is to get things flowing (water element) through inner nourishment, movement and creativity.

Here is a list of some simple things you can do to help become more aware of and balance the Sacral Chakra:

  • Take a nice warm bath or shower or go for a swim - Connect to the water element here, noticing how water flows.
  • Stay hydrated - Drink enough water, enjoy a warm cup of herbal tea.
  • Wear the Color Orange - Either in clothing or jewelry or put a crystal in your pocket like carnelian or moonstone.
  • Use Essential Oils (follow directions and guidelines for use) - Use oils like sweet orange, jasmine, cardamom or geranium and you can find blends already made for the chakras like here at my friend's website.
  • Dance! - Put your favorite music on and flow with the sound.
  • Meditation - Meditate by a body of water or in the sacred space you created in your home.
  • Create some art- Grab some art supplies and draw, doodle, or even color in a coloring book - they have some great mandala ones.
  • Yoga - Of course yoga! You can flow more in your practice, being like water, fluid and flowing - keep in mind the stability and alignment of the earth element and from there you can allow parts of your body to move in a flowing, creative way. The pose I'm doing in the video above is Natarajasana (Dancer Pose or Lord of the Dance Pose). You'll need to warm up a bit before coming into this pose and feel free to use a wall as a prop or a tree like I'm doing.

Here are some ideas to help guide you into the Sacral Chakra:

  • Keep your awareness on your pelvis as you flow through some yoga poses or dance
  • Imagine yourself floating on a body of water
  • Breathe in the color orange into all parts of your body
  • Chant or say the seed sound of this chakra which is Vam.

As you continue to awaken and ignite the Sacral Chakra, you will begin to create more passion and vitality in your life, becoming more in tune with your own feelings and emotions.

You will be able to nurture yourself and others. You will have the ability to enjoy all of life's simple pleasures, without guilt, and be creatively free and alive.

I am fully at home in my being, experiencing deep inner nourishment and healing.

inhale - enjoy - exhale,

gina
